Why broadband prices still rise mid-contract

Feb 24, 2025

Ah, spring is in the air – we can see snowdrops rise, temperatures climb, and mid-contract broadband prices go up.

Wait, what? Price rises again. But Ofcom banned them?

Not exactly.

If you’re in contract with one of the big four providers, brace yourself because, from 30th March, your price could hike once more.

If you’re in contract with us, relax, you’re safe!

The Ofcom ban

Ofcom did ban inflation-linked and percentage-based mid-contract price rises in January. Their research (unsurprisingly) found more than half (55%) of broadband customers do not know what inflation rates, such as CPI and RPI, measure and, therefore, find it difficult to estimate what this means for their payments.

They baffled people with the small print:

"Monthly price will increase every April by the Consumer Price Index rate published in the previous December, plus an additional 3.9%”

And you had no idea what that would add to your monthly bill.

It should be clearer now

Providers are not allowed to include inflation-linked or percentage-based price rises in new contracts. And they must be clear when you buy (or renew) about the rises written into your contract – showing in pounds and pence what the new price will be and from when.

You’ll now see this wording next to prices:

“Monthly subscription price £30.00 until 31 March 2025.

Increasing to £31.50 on 1 April 2025 and £33.00 on 1 April 2026”

So, it should be easier to compare prices and feel more prepared. But most big providers will still have annual price rises written into contracts, even new ones, so prices will still go up every April!
